control

When everything around you is being upended, when things feel entirely out of your control, how do you handle it?

We all have our different ways. I used to be a hoarder, back in 2022. I managed to fix that, got the therapy, cleared the hoard, got rid of my collections for the most part, keep things tidy and organised. In most ways, I'm recovered from it.

But when things are out of my depth, and when things are beyond my control, those urges rear their head again, and I buy myself some cheap and cheerful tech thing, to give myself a project. I flit between interests like pages in a book, I give myself every little thing to keep busy. And once I'm done with that device or that accessory, it goes in my box.

I do clear out my box, I recycle electronics or upcycle them, but it's still just very clear when I'm spiraling because my natural instinct is to turn to eBay or Amazon, search for something to distract me, keep me moving.

So that's what I'll be doing today. I already have Bluetooth controllers and I ordered a cheap tablet for less than £50, which I'll work on turning into a cheap emulation handheld.

I don't need a new emulation handheld, believe me, I have plenty, but once that project is done, I can reuse it. As a hotkey control for my computer, or as a smart hub, or as a wall mounted digital clock, or I can pass it on to a family member, or recycle it.

Things for me are out of control right now, my whole life is being upended, but I hope this little bit of control will be a comfort to me.
